Rustington is a short distance from the imposing sight of Arundel Castle which sits on a hill overlooking the town of Arundel, the magnificent South Downs and the River Arun. Arundel Castle boasts close to 1000 years of history; building began in 1067, in the immediate aftermath of the Norman Conquest in an effort to control a strategic portion of the Sussex coast. Today, the rambling, film set of a castle offers a fascinating day out for when friends and family of all ages come to visit.

Arundel Castle has witnessed every era of history and was once called home by Anne Boleyn and Catherine Howard. Destroyed during the Civil War, the castle was rebuilt in a Gothic revival style and, in a more modern turn of events, was one of the first English country houses to be fitted with electric lights.

The results of all this history are housed at the castle in the incredible collection of furniture, paintings and items, including some personal possessions once belonging to Mary Queen of Scots. The castle also prides itself on bringing history to life with regular events throughout the season. However, if history isn’t your thing, but you’re looking for a great day out, the Tulip Festival, an event as colourful as the castle’s history, sees 60,000 tulips blooming in the castle’s stunning grounds. It is one of the most impressive displays in the country and certainly worth a trip

Once you’ve finished soaking up all the castle’s delights, you can choose from the fantastic onsite restaurant or coffee shop to sit and relax for a while, mulling over the highlights of your day.
